چکیده

At a time when the judicious use of a broad range of immunosuppressive drugs has ensured excellent patient and organ survival rates after kidney transplantation, attention is focusing on strategies to minimize their side effects. Almost all immunosuppressive medications are associated with some form of gastrointestinal (GI) complication (1–6). The majority of these complications fall into one of several general categories: infections, mucosal injury and ulceration, biliary tract diseases, diverticular disease, pancreatitis, and malignancy (Table 1). An understanding of the GI morbidities related to transplantation permits the development of systematic strategies to reduce and manage these disorders. In this article, we provide an overview of the GI complications arising from the use of immunosuppressive medications and review common prophylactic and treatment approaches.

The goals of post-transplant management are to manage and treat postoperative complications, and develop a balanced long-term immunotherapy regimen that minimizes infection and side effects but controls rejection. While modern immunosuppressant regimes have reduced rates of graft loss due to rejection, they impart major risks for infection, growth failure, metabolic complications, and malignanc...

Relationship between post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder and Anti-Thymocyte Globulin or Anti-Lymphocyte Globulin

Abstract Background: Lymphoproliferative disorders are among the most serious and potentially fatal complications of chronic immunosuppression in kidney transplant recipients. The principle risk factors for development of PTLD are the degree of overall immunosuppression and the EBV serostatus of the recipient. In this study, the risk of PTLD in kidney transplant recipients who received Anti- L...

Role of Immunosuppression Minimization Protocols in Renal Transplantation

The subject of transplant immunosuppression has generated significant interest in recent years. Excellent immunosuppression, advances in surgical technique, post-transplantation care, and infection control have resulted in excellent outcomes. There is widespread support for the notion that the fundamental objective in transplant immunology should be the achievement of specific graft toleran...

Practical approach to emergencies in lung transplant recipients: how we do it.

Lung transplant recipients (LTRs) are prone to medical complications and emergencies due to the transplanted organ being in constant direct contact with the environment and the need for life-long profound immunosuppression (IS). As a result of these specific circumstances, the medical and surgical management of LTRs frequently differs from usual standard care. Therefore, we outline here some of...
